Criterion Sale at Amazon Empty Criterion Sale at Amazon

    Post  Brian T Wed Apr 27, 2011 9:50 am

Hopefully this will be of use to other folks here. This sale started yesterday (April 26) and only includes select titles, but it represents a good mix of old and new, DVD and Blu. Most of the prices are easily on par with those offered by Barnes & Noble during their twice-a-year Criterion sales. That BBS Story collection is the cheapest it's ever been. So tempted . . . Wink

I already bought Silent Naruse yesterday, but thanks for the mention (the Criterion sites are quite happy about this deal). I want to buy more, but I might have to wait until next paycheck and hopefully the sale is still open then. Luckily I own most of the DVDs but would like some of the BDs. I am considering getting BBS set too (before paycheck), but not sure if I want to get the BD or DVD.

I've got about seven Blus in my cart (including the BBS box), but I'll probably have to make some sacrifices, at least until the B&N sale. While the public library here, as mentioned elsewhere, has enabled me to at least watch most of the Criterion collection (while secretly wishing my private stock was more in keeping with Shawn's!), I've largely been spending the savings on Hong Kong stuff, and then this happens! Mad Razz

I've decided to stick to only purchasing Blu-rays of Criterion films I want to own. If nothing else, their comparatively low numbers so far -- and these sales -- gives me hope that I can "keep up" with building a small library much better than I ever did with DVDs!

Of course, in an ideal world, a "foreigner" like myself would have access to this little goldmine you Americans have at your fingertips . . .

. . . and public libraries (and maybe even disc collections) would be largely unnecessary. Sigh. One can dream . . .

    Ended up getting:

    MODERN TIMES
    BLOWOUT
    SHOCK CORRIDOR
    THE NAKED KISS
    SWEET SMELL OF SUCCESS
    SENSO

All of these are previously seen films I thought were worth having around. Only BLOW OUT is an upgrade, though, from the old MGM bare-bones disc. Still tempted by that BBS STORY Blu-ray set -- even a Barnes & Noble sale won't reduce it that low -- but this order will necessitate some belt tightening as it is . . . Smile

That's right Criterion go on sale AFTER I spent the Amazon gift card the Easter Bunny brought me! (All the same I can't wait to get the three books and out-of-print CD I purchased).

So it turns out that making a purchase from this sale results in several other titles you didn't buy ending up in your "Gold Box" quick picks at Amazon, further reduced 5% from the sale prices. This all but forced me a couple of days ago to pickup Blu-rays of FISH TANK, YI YI and the YOJIMBO/SANJURO combo set, as well as BASIL DEARDEN'S LONGON UNDERGROUND set on DVD. This purchase in turn led to even more Criterions in my Quick Picks, which I was able to ignore out of disinterest or previous ownership. Then today, more Criterions in the list, including the BBS STORY set at just over $50, and LE CERCLE ROUGE. I really shouldn't, and hopefully won't, but, but . . . Neutral
